During the opening of the festival on January 29 at Kannawidan grounds in Barangay Tamag, an ethnic dance called ‘tadek’ was performed by 100 students of Grades 7 to 12 and teachers of San Emilio National High School. “Tadek” is an indigenous opening ritual. Some of the students continued performing ‘tadek’ during the formal opening of the food, trade fairs, and exhibits. The festival is also a show of the province’s trade and agriculture products, and is a livelihood training ground for women and students through the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Agriculture.
One mission of the festival is paying more attention to the children. It is because of the observation that many traditions, songs, dances, and other Ilocano culture are not recognized by the younger generations of the province. Instead, children are paying more attention to the modern and novelty dances they see television than the traditional ones. It is one of the reasons why the Kannadiwan Festival is conducted.
The local government of Ilocos Sur thought of this festival to encourage the younger generations to learn the indigenous songs and dances of the province.
